While finishing a delicious bowl of Sopa Azteca the other day at Café Mayapán, I ran in to Arturo and Vallarie Enriquez of Vantage Point Studios. Art reminded me that he had taken a few photos of my daughter and me at last year's Dia de los Muertos celebration at Centro Mayapan, and sent them to me a few days later. Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me anything about the origin of the cross with radiating lines symbol on your foreheads in those pictures. I seem to remember reading about the symbol and its connection to Dia ded lod Muertos years ago, but can't find any reference to it online; in fact, your blog is the only place I've even seen the symbol at all on the Internet.

That's a very good question; one that I will do a little research on to see if I can find an accurate answer. When we did these, it was to emulate what we had seen on historical artwork as well as folk art pieces. It could be as simple an answer as that it signifies the power of the cross and what it represents. I've also read that it could be as simple to show that a person has passed on.
